Public Wise, along with its partner organizations, has built an accessible online database of individuals and organizations involved in the deadly riots and insurrection at our nation’s Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Since the November 2021 election, several participants engaged with the January 6 riot won public office.

The Insurrection Index will not only document participants and their offenses, but it will serve as a tool for voters, organizations, and media outlets to hold these individuals accountable and out of public office.

Public Wise

Public Wise envisions a democracy that is truly of the people, by the people, and for the people, with a government that is representative, accountable, trusted, and transparent.

The Insurrection Index is a project of Public Wise. In addition to creating this website and supporting the core partners, we monitor the United States District Court in the District of Columbia for cases involving charged insurrectionists.

Accountable.US

Type of data: Corporate Accountability

Accountable.US leads the Subsidizing Sedition Campaign to investigate funding structures for the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. They research organizations or companies which sponsored, hosted or spoke at rallies. Additionally, they hold corporations accountable for their support of groups and individuals that continue to perpetuate ‘The Big Lie.’

Advance Democracy Inc.

Type of data: Far-Right Forums | FEC Contributions | Social Media

Advance Democracy, Inc. (ADI) is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization that conducts public-interest research and investigations. ADI is investigating the funding, planning, and execution of the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol insurrection. As part of these efforts, ADI is documenting the public statements and social media posts by Members of Congress and other elected officials on matters surrounding the events of January 6th. In addition, ADI operates an “Accountability Dashboard” that tracks committee-to-committee transfers to the 147 members of Congress who objected to the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

American Oversight

Type of data: FOIA Requests | Usage of Public Resources | Communications

American Oversight is a nonpartisan government watchdog that uses open records requests and litigation to expose corruption and to defend democracy.

Their work includes:

Submitting FOIA requests to local, state, and federal offices to conduct investigations into officials who promoted the insurrection and are also active in promoting the Big Lie to see whether public resources were used to spread disinformation and instigated the events of January 6 investigating related communications and directives, and call logs of top officials at multiple agencies, and seeking any assessments about the threat of militia violence that were prepared in advance of the attack by the FBI, the Pentagon, or the Department of Homeland Security.

Campaign for Accountability

Type of data: Public Officials

Campaign for Accountability compiles information of state, local, and federal officials who were charged in the insurrection. Looks into public officials with personal relationships to insurrectionists. Based on research findings, calls for investigations into public officials who aided insurrectionists or were part of the insurrection.

Media Matters Action Network

Type of data: Public Officials | Right-wing Leaders | Staff Involvement

Media Matters Action Network focuses on public officials, right wing leaders, conspiracy theorists, and elected officials staff and how insurrectionists were financed. Their team compiles research on the organizers, funding behind the demonstrations and which organizations participated — particularly their leaders or senior staff. Research also accounts for potential use of public resources to aid the insurrection and connects the dots between funds and participants. Connections between independent funders and organizers who participated in the insurrection are included.

Dossiers on right-wing figures, public officials, and/or funders of the insurrection were created as a means for accountability should these actors choose to launch businesses or run for political office in the future.

Tech Transparency Project

Type of data: Military | Police & Law Enforcement | Far-Right Forums

Tech Transparency Project investigates military and police personnel involvement in the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. They also review far-right social media groups to expose right wing extremism in law enforcement and the military as it relates to January 6.
